Vesna Peno, Ph.D.
Research Associate


Born on 18th December 1968 in Belgrade. She graduated from the Faculty of Music Art (the Department of Musicology) and from the Faculty of Philology (Serbian Literature and Language with General Literature Department).

In 1994, she began postgraduate studies at the Art Academy in Novi Sad. In the Ωδείο Μουσικό Κολλέγιο Θεσσαλονίκης, she obtained the degree of a chanter.

In 1999 she got an employment at the Institute of Musicology in the SASA.

With the scholarships of the Ministry for Science and Technology of the Republic of Serbia, “Alexander Onassis” foundation, the Danish Institute and “Eleni Naku” as well as the Republic of Greece National Scholarship Foundation, over the period between 2001 and 2007, she excelled the neumed Byzantine and late Byzantine paleography, theory and church chanting practice, residing in Athens, Thessaloniki and Copenhagen.

She defended her doctoral thesis at the Department for the National medieval history at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade in 2008.

She has founded a female choir “Saint Cassiana”.

At the Faculty of Theology she lectured the recent Serbian and Byzantine chanting during the summer term in 2005. Since 2010 she has been a lecturer on History of Music at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade.

She has participated in numerous scientific conferences both in the country and abroad. She is a member of the ISOCM, the ASBMH and the studing group “Cantus Planus”. From the 2011 she has been appointed for an editor-in-chief of the international journal Musicology.
